Q: We bought a dog for our children as a Christmas gift, any suggestions? Learn everything you can and begin training immediately. A: Toying with the idea of surprising your loved ones with a puppy, kitten, or newly-adopted dog or cat. This question is on the minds of many during the holidays. Yes, it is a fun and warm gift to give someone you love but, the sad reality is, that many of these "surprises" end up in shelters that are already full of untrained and unwanted pets.Pets that have been abandoned because their recipients were neither prepared for the challenges of pet ownership or aware of the number of responsibilities.

The first night with a new pet is always the roughest, and most pets feel a little stressed-in the new surroundings. Animals need space; this is a good time for you and your family to find a place in your home where your new pet will feel comfortable and relaxed.Plan on a good location for the pet bed, food dish, accident pad or litter box. Make rules for smaller children, and show them how to hold their new pet. If the new pet is feeling unsure behaviors such as digging, chewing, and whining or meowing may occur. Regular exercise,a balanced diet, and ensuring his or her new home is safe are excellent beginnings to a well mannered pet. Questions comments please e-mail Julia @
