Friday, August 21, 2009 Teaching the whistle for a recall TRAINING TIP
A good quality whistle is essential.A whistle carries further than the human voice.Food reward will speed trainng up but it must be hidden in the pocket or your treat bag. 1. Charge up the whistle; You only do this once to build a associations good things come when i hear the whistle.
Place the dog on a leash and begin in a low distraction environment. Whistle than treat at least 20 times. 2. Using a 6ft leash or 30 ft long line whistle then back up away from the dog as you reel the leash in causing the dog to come to you.
3. Once the dog is in front of you place the dog in a sit and then give a treat. 4. Practice this indoors and outdoors many repetitions. I recommend for off leash comes first practicing with a a long line until your dog comes running every time she hears the whistle and make sure to train with distractions so when you truly need your dog to come to you with a distraction and off the leash they will be well trained and will. Always reward and never correct a dog for not coming or you can ruin the come command. If a dog does not respond it is usually from in proper training and not a stubborn dog.
Imagine what a 4 year old human child would do and realize that is what your are training cognitively with a adult dog.
