Print  Monday, February 2, 2009     Teach the dog to come.   TRAINING TIP

Come Equipment needed: 5-6’ leash, a 15-20 ft long line, safe shoes and treat bag. Objective: To train your dog to come to you with excitement. Always make the come command a fun and highly praised behavior. Step 1-4 1. Allow your dog to become distracted (since this will be when you will need him/her to come in the real world). 2. Quietly back up 10-15 steps. Do not signal him/her verbal or tug the leash. 3. Say “dogs name and Come”. Reel the leash in as you back up. Do not stop backing up until dog is in front of you, facing you with paws to toes. At this point you should be at the end of the leash near the dogs’ collar. Reach down and grab your dog’s collar and with the other hand slide down your dog’s spine and silently place the dog in a Sit. 4. Say “good come” and treat. Release say” Go Play” • If your dog likes to retrieve try to reward with a hidden toy. Do all of the above and when you release the dog throw the toy as the reward.

Very IMPORTANT – Inside/ outside, never train off leash, otherwise you may invariably teach a dog when the leash is on I must do this because my parent can make it happen and when the leash is off I may go do what I want. Never yell or correct a dog while using this command. Puppies under 4-5 months old will stay at your side like a 2 yr old child does with a parent. At this stage the biggest mistake parents make is not using a leash because the dog habitually follows close by. It may also look as though the puppy knows the word come. But as the dog matures to the next development stage around 4-5 months old they become a little more confident and will begin to investigate the world with out you, just like a 4 yr child. This is when a dog may stop responding to your request. So many parents’ feel the dog is acting stubborn as the dog runs off to do other fun stuff just as a toddler would. When in reality the dog was never taught a come & the parent did not prepare for the dogs independence. A good Come requires good training never say come to something your dog feels icky about or you will ruin it. Training a good come in all environments (parks, yard, high activity areas) may require 8-12 months of consistent training.
