Tuesday, October 14, 2008 Jumping Up TRAINING TIP
For many dogs, jumping up on people is part of their greeting routine. Often, owners have tried to
discourage this behavior using methods such as squeezing the front feet, stepping on the dog's toes or kneeing the dog. The behavior usually continues. It is always first important to ask yourself what is motivating the behavior and causing the dog to jump? What reinforcement for the behavior is continuing? Usually the motivation for the jumping up is to greet people. Many dogs like to greet face to face, "like they do with their canine counterparts".
You need to be sure you have identified all the reinforcement for the behavior. If the dog succeeds in getting any attention for the jumping behavior, then the dog will continue to jump.Petting pushing away (which resembles play behavior)and even, reprimands can be reinforcing for a dog who really wants attention. To change this behavior you need to remove All reinforcement. This means that you do not look, speak, touch or interact with the dog IN ANY WAY when it jumps on you. When greet your dog for the first 5 minutes act quiet and mimic the responses until the dog keeps 4 paws on the ground then greet.
Step 1.As you walk in the room do not look at the dog if he jumps quickly turn your back and walk away then turn back and when the dog remains 4 paws on the ground say good and pet.
Step 2. When people come you must stage many fake setting so get family and friends to help but teach them the proper way to greet your dog to achieve success. If you have allowed this to go on for along time keep the dog on a leash and hold it as visitor enters the home they must ignore the dog and walk pat until the dog calms and 4 paws are on the ground then greet and treat. If the dog jumps quickly have the visitor turn their back and walk away you may have to repeat this exercise many times and for many weeks. Some people like to allow the dog to jump on them at certain times. You must never allow the dog to choose the time.Ideally you should teach your dog to jump up on command such as "give me a hug" or "come up here." This way, you have the behavior under verbal control and you decide when the dog will be allowed to jump on you.
