Here are some basic guide lines.

1. If you plan to leave your house that night the constant buzzing of the doorbell with out your comfort could cause panic in your pet and lead to wetting accidents, and for a older dog cause enough stress to have a heart attack. Be sure to have a plan of action ready, whether you choose to have a companion stay with your pet for the evening, or give a natural remedy to soothe their nerves and promote calmness. Place your pet in a quiet room far from the noise of the active door have the room set up with blankets, toys, and soothing music or animal planet. If your pet is outside consider bringing him in and keeping him in a crate or with you or at least bring him into the garage but beware of (garage hazards).

2. Walk your dog before trick-or-treat begins to help avoid accidents and calm your dog but make sure to pay attention to your dogs behavior and signs of stress costumes can be frightening. Weeks before the goblin night have the kids in the house or you many times wear a mask, hats etc. Act calm as you walk up and drop a treat then walk away. This will build a positive association but do not pet your dog if she is frighten and say "its okay" or you will invariantly reward your dogs fear.

3. Beware beside the tick-or-treaters taunting, poisonings and pet thefts are also risk factors so please do not keep your pet in high activity areas.

4. Chocolate can kill a dog so make sure to keep all garbage cans covered or out of reach. A dogs smell is 400 times greater than ours so candy dept in a bag on the floor or paper wrappers will be very hard for a dog to ignore. Plan as you would if you had a toddler running in the home (doggie proof). Chocolate poison symptoms include diarrhea, hyperactivity, muscle tremors and seizures, excessive drooling ,rapid heartbeat. Call a vet or emergency center immediately.
