Let’s Go! My students’ most common complaints is how poorly their dogs walk on the leash-the pulling, the lunging, the refusing to move forward. The good news is that you can teach your dog the mechanics of a walk that will be fun for both of you. Let’s Go Before you can teach a dog to walk on a leash you have to know exactly what you’re asking of your dog. Puppies first of all are unfamiliar with the concept of wearing a collar and leash. Playing with your pup while he first wears the gear will help. All commands must be given in a happy tone not a firm one. all parents and family must agree to use the same command for the same behavior and not change it day to day. Imagine traffic lights changing the meaning every day how confusing and stressful. If my dog could speak, they would tell you that Let’s Go means they have to walk at my left side, their front legs even with my legs, keeping reasonable eye contact with me so they can change direction or stop when I do. They can’t sniff the ground, randomly stop, bark, lunge,or cut in front of me. They can’t go to the bathroom and mark every tree. Let’s go means we’re taking a controlled walk. But because this type of walk doesn’t allow the dog to sniff, explore,go potty or just be a dog, I release him by saying,”OK,go play!”

1. Have your dog sitting at your left side or standing. In a distraction free environment. Have treats ready in your treat pouch ready. 2. Say you dog’s name and “Let’s Go,” take a step or two forward and treat your dog then place him in a sit and treat. 3. After a few successful steps forward, reward your dog and then release him. “Ok, go play!” 4. If the dog lunges ahead stop and stand like a tree or turn the opposite direction of the dog. If he is on your left side as he should be you would turn to the right quickly to surprise the dog for not paying attention to you the goal is to do this before his chest has passed your leg. 5. After many successful attempts begin to add distractions.
